And just like that, the year is over. Before we pack it up for the holidays and pray that we don’t have to learn more of the Greek alphabet in 2022, we’re sharing an essential playlist for the best music of 2021 courtesy of our resident music expert and legendary L.A. radio DJ Nic Harcourt. Every week, Nic updates his must-listen Spark Radio playlist on Spotify with new tracks from a range of artists and genres, and now he’s compiled his 100 favorites from the past 12 months. This playlist traverses vibes, generations and sounds. It features everything from Tony Joe White’s “Boot Money,” a newly released demo from the ’70s blues singer which could easily be the intro song to an HBO slow-burn detective procedural today, to the groovy genius of Chicano Batman, the infectious driving beat of Angelique Kidjo, the Strokes-eque sound of Red Pears, and our favorite Brooklyn post-punks Parquet Courts, who even ended up on Barack Obama’s Best-Of playlist this year. Hit play and dance into 2022.
